How do the cells, tissues and organs work together in
the nervous system?
In this picture we can see the various divisions of the nervous system (eg. the vertebrate nervous system). Not only are their several divisions within the nervous system, but this picture displays the unique way all of these parts of the system are connected and work together. Below are two videos which highlight how the cells, tissues and organs of the nervous system work together.
what happens if they dont FUNCTION properly?
To highlight how important the nervous system is, and how our body would not be able to function without it, consider the consequences of a spinal cord injury, or a stroke.
A spinal cord injury refers to any injury to the spinal cord that is caused by trauma instead of disease. Depending on where the spinal cord and nerve roots are damaged, the symptoms can vary widely, from pain to paralysis to incontinence. If a serious spinal cord injury were to happen, nerve impulses would cease to exist, or not be understood by the brain.
A stroke is the loss of function due to a blockage or rupture of a blood vessel to the brain. The effected part of the brain is unable to function properly. Please see the image to your left as it explains the symptoms that happen in different parts of the body after a stroke has happened.
